28th March 1920 -- 19th January 1997
Bill was born at the family home in Kingsland, Herefordshire. He was a premature baby weighing only a few pounds and was not expected to live. But due to the great care of his grandmother and a strong fighting spirit he survived. This strength of character and determination was evident throughout his life as he went on to build a very successful business and compete in the world of motor sport at a high level.
Christened Alfred Edward after his father he soon became known as Bill which caused some confusion over the years as many thought his name must be William. Bill had a cousin who was named William, also called Bill Bengry, who was a well known businessman through his involvement with Bengry's Quarrys Ltd, so to avoid further confusion our Bill was listed in the phone book as Bill Bengry "Rally Driver" hence the title.
The following pages tell the story of Bill Bengry's life through newspaper and magazine articles as well as a collection of personal notes and memories from various sources. It is my intention to add to the pages as I recieve stories or find articles which may be of interest.
In all cases I have replicated the text as it appeared on the original and have noted at the end if there are any known discrepancies.
